NCLAT Dismisses ADAVL Appeal Against Reliance Brand Name Usage by IIHL, ETLegalWorld

New Delhi, Insolvency appellate tribunal NCLAT has dismissed an appeal by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Ventures Pvt Ltd (ADAVL) against the use of the “Reliance” brand name for Reliance Capital, after the Hinduja group firm IndusInd International Holdings Ltd (IIHL).

Counsel appearing for IIHL informed the appellate insolvency tribunal NCLAT that the grievance of ADAVL has been addressed and an affidavit regarding this has been filed.

“…the change in the name of the company has been effected and the same is changed from ‘Reliance Capital Ltd.’ to ‘IndusInd’ and an affidavit with regard to the aforesaid facts has also been filed on 11.09.2026, in pursuance of the order of this Appellate Tribunal dated 07.09.2026,” he said.

This was also confirmed by ADAVL, as its counsel “fairly submits” that nothing survives in the appeal and that it may be dismissed as infructuous, noted NCLAT in its order.

“In view of the aforesaid, as indicated by learned counsel for the Appellant, nothing survives to be considered in the appeal and the same is dismissed as has become infructuous,” the tribunal said.

ADAVL had sought a stay on the use of the “Reliance” trademark after the takeover of Reliance Capital through the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP).

The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had dismissed its plea in October 2024, following which ADAVL moved the NCLAT.

During a hearing in October 2025, IIHL had told the NCLAT that the process of changing the brand name was under way and was likely to be completed.

Reliance Capital was placed under RBI-appointed administration in November 2021 owing to governance lapses and payment defaults. The central bank appointed an administrator, who invited bids for the company in February 2022.

IIHL, a Hinduja group firm, emerged as the successful resolution applicant in April 2023 with an offer of Rs 9,650 crore. It later infused Rs 200 crore to bolster the solvency of Reliance General Insurance Company Ltd, over and above the bid amount.
